Abstract

This study emphasizes the relevance of Walter Benjamin‟s thought to the investigation of the communicative role of the visual arts. To that extent, we will review his considerations on the influence of modernity in arts, specially the modifications in the aesthetic experience after the introduction of the mechanisms to reproduce images. This article also debates the concepts of thresholds and borders, demonstrating how these notions, according to Benjamin, can be explored in arts to create critical images. Finally, the political function of the arts - appointed by Benjamin as an aesthetic alternative to mimesis - will be analyzed in
two works which deal with borders and thresholds regarding the contemporary space. The analysis of these examples will follow a
phenomenological method, which seeks to describe their sensible qualities, their unique elements and interpretative effects.
