Histórias de vidas de dois sujeitos egressos da educação de jovens e adultos de uma favela carioca

Abstract

The Youth and Adult Education (EJA) modality is considered a reference for recovering lost study time, aimed at those who, for some reason, did not have access to school. We also find in public policies, references that EJA can act in the emancipation of individuals and, from a pedagogical perspective, that it can contribute to a more critical reading of the world. But, what kind of emancipation has EJA provided to its students? Has it contributed to a transforming view of reality? Or has it just been meeting the marketing principles of the current corporate model? In order to understand this context, we carried out research with two individuals who had graduated from EJA, who lived in a favela in Rio de Janeiro. Although our results cannot be generalized, they contributed to understanding that the passage of the working class through this type of education, depending on their life trajectory and the social context in which they are inserted, plays a greater or lesser role for their insertion in the world of work. This access to work leads to the understanding of access to citizenship based on the consumption of material goods and adaptation to the current socioeconomic context. Although the role of EJA is limited in view of the emancipatory perspective, as defended by critical social theories, from the point of view of the condition of the socially excluded subject, EJA can be considered as an alternative for social ascension of an individual and material nature, and has consequences profound insights into subjective formation.
